portfolio notes
I have assembled four portfolios to show different aspects of my work over the past few years. My artwork is initiated though photography, inspired by nature and expressed through digital play with Adobe Photoshop. I print my final pieces on an Epson 3800 archival ink printer on various fine art cotton fiber papers. This media softens the image and in many cases renders an illustrative quality.

photo collage
As with traditional collage, the digital darkroom offers the technology to layer image upon image with seemingly endless possibilities. The pieces in this portfolio along with many in Conversation Between Friends (below), have emerged from the play and harmonizing of two or more ideas. The images are a combination of photography, scans and digital illustration. Some come together quickly, others have taken months to complete.
conversation between friends
From 2007-2009 I collaborated with my friend and artist Dan Beam on a creative project of the heart — an "art conversation" between Dan’s acrylic paintings on canvas and my printed digital photos and collages. The seed of this project was planted in the garden at the Crossroads Café in San Francisco where we gather with friends for Saturday morning tea and conversation.
Our spontaneous art conversation – without words, rules or expectations – spun, wandered and leaped between painting and photograph. The conversation itself became the synchronistic, creative force that informed and shaped our artistic expression, challenged each of us to grow as artists and sweetly deepened our long friendship. We mirrored and borrowed from each other's work, yet spoke from our own distinct voice and perspective. In this portfolio I have attempted to show the relationship between some of the artwork that we generated through this project.
imaginary landscapes
My personal edge rests in the natural world. Introspective by nature, my ‘eyes of the heart’ track landscapes in small and unexpected places — the luminous edge of a leaf or flower, the play of shadow on rock, a plant mysteriously returning to seed form, the ephemeral play of frost on top of a park bench. I look for the third thing that is created when two or more elements engage in conversation ... a pattern, rhythm, dissonance, distinct beauty. Like all conversations, this is a fluid process, in the moment, never again the same. Unlike my photo collages, "Imaginary Landscapes" is a collection of digital photographs taken from my point of view.
creative scans
This portfolio is a sampling of creatively scanned images… beauty gathered from the walkways of San Francisco. What began as a convenient way to capture a shape or an idea 'for the files' took shape into an unique art form that deeply satisfies my curiosity for the unseen… creatively composed on an HP office printer and digitally enhanced. These studies are reminiscent of botanical illustrations of flora and fauna from earlier times in our history, when there was greater fascination with the intimacy and intricate detail found in the natural world.
